RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
